FIRE ALARMS

Fire Alarm Systems: Design, Installation and Maintenance

Whether you have a residential or commercial property, the safety of the occupants is paramount.

Installing smoke alarms and fire detection systems will help protect them and your property against fire. By law, commercial premises are required to be protected from fire, so your premises must undergo a full Fire Risk Assessment to ensure you are compliant with current regulations.

At East Coast Fire Services, we provide a range of fire protection for commercial, industrial and domestic environments. We use only the highest quality equipment, technology and advanced systems from leading manufacturers. Our fully trained BAFE registered engineers can design, supply, install and commission most types of fire alarm systems that offer comprehensive protection and monitoring services.

There are three main types of fire alarm systems. Conventional fire alarm systems divide your premises into broad zones and are suitable for low-risk environments such as small offices or homes. In the event of an alert, the fire alarm panel can identify the entire zone where the signal came from but will not pinpoint the exact area of the triggered alarm.

An addressable fire alarm system assigns each device with its unique electronic address and makes it easier to identify which device has been triggered. The system can then quickly notify local responders to take necessary action. These alarms are most suitable for more extensive and higher risk areas, such as education facilities, hotels, hospitals and offices blocks.

Wireless fire alarm systems work similarly to addressable fire alarms. However, they use a secure wireless link between the sensors and the fire alarm panel instead of wires. For aesthetic reasons, these fire alarms are most suited to historical buildings, museums and religious spaces.

British Standards recommends that fire alarms systems are serviced every six months. Our maintenance programs are specifically designed to meet your needs, and our risk assessment will identify your exact requirements to ensure you comply with current regulations.

Fire Risk Assessments

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (RRO) requires employers, building owners, or occupiers to conduct a fire risk assessment. Dependent on the assessment findings, employers will need to ensure that adequate and appropriate fire safety measures are in place to minimise the risk of injury or loss of life in the event of a fire. Documentation and records must be up to date.

At East Coast Fire Services, we can provide you with a fire risk assessment package explicitly tailored to your building and business requirements. Once completed, we will provide you with documentation highlighting our recommendations, including digital photographic evidence.

Your Fire Risk Assessment must be reviewed and updated continuously, especially if there are any changes in premises, processes or number of people employed. Ideally, you should check it at intervals not exceeding 12 months.

Fire Alarm Monitoring

Having your fire alarm systems connected to a monitoring centre will ensure that your home or business premises are protected when empty. A digital signal is sent automatically to the Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC) in a fire, enabling them to act quickly and call the appropriate emergency services and key holder, minimising loss and damage.

When a fire breaks, there is no time to delay. Fire can spread rapidly, causing substantial damage and disruption to your business. Monitored fire alarms aren’t dependent on people in the building or passing by to raise the alarm; the fire brigade is alerted as soon as it’s triggered.

If you own a vacant property, fire safety is your legal responsibility. As a business owner or private landlord, you need to ensure it remains safe and secure whilst it’s empty. You must have proper fire safety procedures in place, as this will help protect your property. Arson is much more common in empty buildings as opposed to those which are occupied. 60% of fires occur in or beside vacant or derelict properties in the UK. Your insurance company will want to investigate any potential failures on your part and see if you have met the necessary fire safety regulations. This could mean that in the event of a fire, you may not receive a payout.

Using our fully accredited monitoring provider will assure you are protected 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
